Businesses came out in support of our I Love Earl's Court - Save It From Demolition Day. All along the Earls Court Road and Old Brompton Road, landmark shops, restaurants, pubs and venues put up our posters. Photographs by Cinzia D'Ambrosi.
This is a traditional shopping parade, which has changed over the years, but the consistent feeling is that the businesses, of all kinds, are there as a response to the Exhibition Centre. The amenity value of these businesses is rated highly by residents has a knock on effect in making this a desirable, central London location for workers.
The RBKC Council has failed to understand the longterm fall out of 6 years of the Exhibition being dead and is not prepared to fund an enterprise initiative to support existing businesses respond to change.
The concern is that the developers will relocate the heart of the present community into the site, leaving us with an increase of traffic on the Earl's Court One-Way System making the road less resident friendly.
Hotels in the main are targeting the Exhibition rather than vacation trade and without the destination location will have to compete with other parts of London. Some have voiced the opinion that they would prefer to revert to hostels rather than lose the long term equity in their properties.
